Tourism Versailles
Versailles is a town famous for the Palace of Versailles, which was the capital of the kingdom of France from 1682 to 1789. Nowadays is a wealthy suburb of Paris and is still a major administrative centre. Situated in the west of Paris, 17km from the city centre more exactly, Versailles is the administrative seat of the Yvelines department. The population of the city is about 90,000 inhabitants. The city of Versailles has an area of 26.18 km², which is a quarter of the area of the city of Paris.
Versailles was made the capital of the former Seine-et-Oise département in March 1790. By the 1960s, the Seine-et-Oise département had more than 2 million inhabitants, and was too large to govern hence its division into three départements in 1968. Versailles was made the préfecture of the Yvelines département, the largest part of the former Seine-et-Oise département.
The city has a symmetrical grid of streets. Versailles was a very modern European city in the 18th century. Versailles is a chic city well linked with Paris by numerous train lines. Versailles is a place of services, such as public administration, tourism, business congresses, and festivals. Versailles is also an important military centre, with several units and training schools headquartered at the Satory military base, which was the headquarters of the 2nd French Armoured Division until 1999, and where a military exhibition is organised every year.
In the past, Versailles has been known for several treaties such as Treaty of Paris, ending the American Revolutionary War and the Treaty of Versailles, ending World War I.
