Musée Matisse

The Musée Matisse in Nice is one of only two museums in the world dedicated to the French painter Henry Matisse. The museum has one of the world's largest collections of works of the painter. In this remarkable collection are included, his most famous paintings but also almost all of his sculptures, drawings and engravings. The Musée Matisse is a good opportunity to discover the works of this painter who could turn people crazy as it was said at the time.

The Matisse Museum, established in 1963 and wanted by Henry Matisse himself, now occupies a Genoese villa from 1670, amid an olive grove in the Parc des Arènes de Cimiez. This choice of location is mainly due to the fact that Henry Matisse lived most of his life in Nice a few kilometers nearby. More recently, the museum was extended expanded at a total renovation.

The Matisse Museum's permanent collection is currently composed of 68 paintings, 236 drawings, 218 prints, 57 sculptures, covering his entire sculptural work, 14 illustrated books, 95 photographs, but also 187 objects that belonged to the painter. Temporary exhibitions are also held each year.
