Calvados is a French department that is part of the region of Basse-Normandie . It is surrounded by the departments of Seine-Maritime, Eure, Orne and Manche. It includes the Pays d'Auge and the area known as the "Suisse normande" (Norman Switzerland). Calvados' most remarkable places include Deauville and its 19thcentury casino resorts. Caen-Carpiquet and Deauville-Saint Gatien are the two main airports. Among the tourist areas are: the Plain of Caen, the Bocage Virois, the Côte de Nacre, and the Côte Fleurie. The most popular beaches in Calvados are Cabourg and Merville-Franceville-Plage. The beaches of the landing of 1944 also hosts many tourists as there are several monuments of the history of landings on the Normandy coast. Other tourists attractions are the castle of Pommeraye, the regional park of Marais du Cotentin and Bessin near Isigny-sur-Mer and the cliffs of black cows in Houlgate.
