Tourism Caen
Caen is the main city of the Calvados department located in the region of Basse-Normandie. Caen is both a city of history and a city facing the future. Located a few kilometers from the Channel, the beaches of the invasion of Normandy, the famous seaside resorts of Deauville and Cabourg, Swiss Normandy, Caen offers many opportunities for tourists.
Caen, almost entirely destroyed during the Second World War, is also known for its historic buildings built during the reign of William the Conqueror. The Castle of Caen, built in 1060 by William the Conqueror, is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe. Nowadays, it houses a museum and hosts many art and historical exhibitions. The city of Caen is divided between a modern part and an old city that has a unique heritage, counting nearly 86 listed buildings in the "Historical Monuments".
Caen, city affected by the Second World War, has been awarded by the honorable mention for the “Cities for Peace” by the UNESCO as the city promotes peace values, solidarity and defense of human rights as shows the creation of the Memorial de Caen.
