Palais des Papes
The Palais de Papes is the symbol of the glory of the Church in the christian western world in the 14th century.
It was built in 1335, in less than 20 years, by two popes, Benoit XII and Clément VI. This monument constitutes the largest gothic palace in the world with 15,000 m2 in surface thus the volume of 4 gothic cathedral. The visitors will discover more than twenty places such as a theater, the popes appartments and their amazing frescoes deco by artist Matteo Giovananetti.
The monument also presents cultural events throughout the year with thematic and educational exhibitions, thematic tours, concerts etc…
During the summer season, a large art exhibition takes place in the « Grande Chapelle » whereas the Avignon festival takes place in the « Court d’Honneur ».
The Palais des Papes is part of the ten most visited monument in France with more than 650,000 visitors each year.
