Fortifications de Neuf-Brisach


Classified as World Heritage by the UNESCO, the fortifications of Neuf-Brisach, surrounding the fortress of Neuf-Brisach, are the latest achievement attributed to the Réseau Vauban and the outcome of the work of the famous architect. Nowadays, the magnificent fortifications of Neuf-Brisach are one of the finest masterpieces of military architecture made by Vauban, unique site offering a beautiful illustration of the third generation system of Vauban. New town created in 1697 in the plain of Alsace near the Rhine, according to the plans of Vauban and decided by Louis XIV, Neuf-Brisach has forty-eight square composed of houses around the huge and impressive main square which hosts the market. However, the walled city of Vauban was destroyed by bombings over the centuries before being entirely restored. The fortifications of Neuf-Brisach were built in a octagonal form, surrounded by walls of five meters high and ditches were dug around it, to make impenetrable, the city of Vauban. Today, visitors can admire and walk inside these ditches, around Neuf-Brisach.
