Musée Carrée d'Art

The Carré d'art, made of glass, concrete and steel, is built opposite the Maison Carrée, a Roman temple dating back to the beginning of the first century AD, of which it constitutes a contemporary counterpart.

Following the catastrophic floods of 1988 that devastated the Maison Carrée forum, Norman Foster was also commissioned to rehabilitate and recreate the Place de la Maison Carrée, which had previously been occupied by cars.

Carré d'Art opened its doors in 1993 with the aim of offering the population a museum of contemporary art and a public reading establishment.

Inspired by the model of the Centre national d'art et de culture Georges-Pompidou, inaugurated in Paris in 1977, it constitutes a shared cultural facility for the city of Nîmes.
