Nîmes is the capital of the Gard department. The city has a rich history, dating from the Roman Empire, and it is a well-known tourist destination. It has an amazing Roman Coliseum that is the second biggest after Rome's.
The Arenas is a Roman Amphitheatre, is well preserved and hosts bull-fighting festivals in September. It was built a 100 years AD. 24,000 spectators had the possibility to seat. The Maison Carré is a beautifully preserved 1st century Roman temple.
Le Jardin de la Fontaine is the home of Nîmes other important Roman monuments, beautiful statues, temple of Diane.
The surrounding wall Roman offered by the Emperor Augustus in Nimes is one of the vastest surrounding walls of the Gaul Roman. The Door Auguste as well as the Door of France are the only still visible doors.
