Le Baptistère Saint-Jean
Regarded as one of the oldest Christian buildings in France, the Baptistery of St. John was built between the fourth and the fifth century. Merovingian decoratio remain on the outside walls. They are also roman and gothic mural paintings that are well preserved. The octagonal pool in the center of the baptistery was used to baptize the early Christians who were totally immersed in water.
The baptistry underwent multiple transformations throughout history and was saved from demolition by the state who bought it in 1830 to give it to the Society of Antiquaries who kept some of their collections in the monument.
