Château de Foix

The castle of Foix is an outstanding and imposing fortress. It was built in the eleventh century and was considered impregnable at the time. It has since retained its appearance of a medieval fortress. Come to visit it and thus immerse in the Medieval Ages. The castle of Foix, with its three towers and high walls, towers above the rivers Arget and Ariège on an imposing rocky outcrop overlooking the medieval town of Foix and offering a magnificent panoramic view on the Pyrenees landscape. The castle of Foix, was until the late Middle Ages, the symbol of a powerful lord: The Comté de Foix.

First main fortress of this lord, then the castle housed the garrison until the late Middle Ages and was used for the defense of the city thanks to its strategic position and served later as a prison for several centuries before being ranked as “Monument Historique” in 1840. It now houses the Museum of Ariège dedicated to the history of this region since prehistoric times. Visiting the Castle also allows its visitors to discover this monument’s architectural quality, and gain access to exhibitions based on the Middle Ages in Foix and Ariege. In summer, some outstanding performances “son et lumière” are also organized inside.
