Cathédrale Saint-Pierre d'Angoulême
The Cathedral Saint-Pierre, located in the historic center of Angouleme, is the most remarkable monument of the city.
The monument built in the twelfth century and listed as a historic monument in 1840, consists of a single nave, a large transept and a semicircular chevet with apses. The Cathedral Saint-Pierre d'Angoulême is one of the rare Romanesque cathedrals of France. Notably due to the complete restoration of the cathedral done by Paul Abadie in the nineteenth century, the architect of the Sacré-Coeur de Montmartre in Paris, who undertook to remove any non-roman element added in order to restore the Cathedral Saint-Pierre with an architectural unity.
The impressive facade of the cathedral carved of series of arches incorporates the biblical episodes of the Ascension and the Last Judgement, through more than 70 characters engraved in stone to show these scenes. The Heritage Department of Angouleme, ranked city of “Art and Histoire”, offers guided tours of the city, including of course the remarkable Cathedral Saint-Pierre d'Angoulême.
