Aude is part of the régionLanguedoc-Roussillon. It borders the departments of Pyrénées-Orientales in the south, west Ariège, Haute-Garonne to the north-west, north of the Tarn and Hérault northeast. To the east, the department is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea (Gulf of Lions) on 47 km. Its area is 6343 km, which ranks among the 39 French departments. Aude is also a Pyrenean department whose highest point is the peak Madres to 2469 m.
