Tourism Strasbourg
The city of Strasbourg, Prefecture of the Bas-Rhin, is located at the German border. The city is the capital intellectual, cultural and economic Alsace. Host of the Council of Europe and the parliament of the European Union, the city of Strasbourg is a beacon of European integration with the city of Brussels. The city of Strasbourg also maintains close ties with neighboring Germany as evidenced by the many academic exchange with the University of Strasbourg. Alsace has long had the heart of the Franco-German rivalry before becoming instead a symbol of their friendship now.
What to do in Strasbourg ?
City of art and history, the center of Strasbourg, called the Big Island is very touristy and has been classified World Heritage by UNESCO in 1998. The facades of houses and monuments reflect the history of the city and its prosperity during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, where trade flourished.
Strasbourg is also internationally known for its Christmas market near the cathedral or in other neighborhoods. Notre-Dame in pink sandstone is also the emblem of the city a must. Its construction was very long: the foundations date from 1015 and the famous spire was not completed until 1439. This explains all the currents that are represented in this church.
Gastronomy in Strasbourg
Alsatian cuisine is essentially made of goose or pork fat. Strasbourg's ham and sausage are the main culinary specialities of the city. the Choucroute is another famous plate in Alsace. Among the other inevitable foods, there is the baeckoffe or the singed tart. Sylvaner wine is often served with delicatessen.

In the southwest of the Grand Ile is la petite France with its beautiful half-timbered houses and riverside parks.
The magnificent Cathedrale Notre Dame dating back to 1176 dominates Strasbourg and offers an amazing view of the city. with Its impressive stained glass windows alone make it worth a visit.
The Museum de l'Oeuvre de Notre-Dame is the Strasbourg's finest museum, it has an excellent collection of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance sculpture in stone and wood.
The new Musee d'Art Moderne et Contemporain houses a great collection of paintings and sculpture from the impressionists to the present including Monet, Manet and Chagall.
The Museum of Archaeology is one of the most rich and varied in France. Come and discover the exhibitions of national antiques, from prehistory to the early Middle-Ages, counting the past of the Alsace region.
The Fine Arts museum houses many masterpieces of the European painting, from its beginning until the 1870‘s.
The Palais d'Europe, home of the European Parliament, is located 2km northeast of the cathedral and is open to the public for one-hour tours each weekday.
It has the most modern tramway in Europe as well as being the most bicycle-friendly city in France with a 300 kilometers network of cycling lanes. Also, Alsace has the largest collection of star-rated gastronomical restaurants in France.
