Montfort-l'amaury

Small medieval city of Yvelines, near the Rambouillet forest, Montfort-l'Amaury offers you 1000 years of history through its historic buildings.

Come to walk on the stoned streets, discover the church and its glass roof of 16th century, the old mass grave, the ruins of the medieval castle of the Counts de Montfort, the Tower of Anne de Bretagne or admire the factories of the park of the Castle of Groussay.

The Castle of Groussay is located rue de Versailles in Montfort-l'Amaury in Yvelines. This “country house” dating from 1820 was transformed into a castle by Charles de Beistegui who owned it in 1938, at the begining of the second world war.

The building was not protected under the historic buildings list, so he was free to modify the building on his own way; he built two added sides, a theatre and a ballroom known as Dutch Room and creates an original… but transient work.

• City walls from 11st and 12nd centuries which there remain only some ruins and the Bardoul Door,
• Castle of Montfort, also called Anne de Bretagne Tower: built at the 12nd century, destroyed during the Hundred Years War, there remains only the ruins of the dungeon which Anne de Bretagne made build later on,
• Prison of 13th century,
• Saint-Pierre church: church of 15th and 16th centuries, an impressive and rare size for a small town, built by Anne de Bretagne instead of a medieval church of 11st century.
• Cemetery of 15th and 16th centuries, surrounded by galleries as in a cloister, used as mass grave for the burial of the bodies from the old cemetery of the church.
