Aubignan & Beaumes-de-Venise

aubignan-beaumes-de-venise

The area around Aubignan is a mixture of hills and former marshes. A stone's throw from Beaumes de Venise and the famous Côtes du Rhône vineyards. Here you will have the opportunity to take advantage of the peaceful countryside while being very close to the town and its facilities (6 km from Carpentras). Aubignan is a major producer of young vines and vine grafts. Industry and handicrafts are very active in the area. Don't miss the Provencal market, held every Saturday morning from April to October. Historical remains worth visiting/seeing : Porte de France : the clock tower and campanile. of the church of St. Victor. The former wheat market hall (1728) Hôtel-Dieu (Old charity hospital) (1745), St Sixte chapel (12th cent.) Events : Christmastide evening (traditional provencal flute concert) in December. Beaumes-de-Venise : Gourmets and those with discerning taste buds will not spend too much time up in the caves and the chapels on the hill, knowing that below in the village, on Avenue Raspail, wine cellars offering tasting and sale of the famous Beaumes de Venise Muscat wine are waiting for them. This wine is renowned far beyond the borders of the Comtat Vénaissin. There are several vintages and several subtle savours available...The "Tradition" vintage will go very well with melon in summer, the "Bois Doré" is clearly a more distinguished wine, the perfectl accompaniment for pan-fried foie gras. Why not try both and decide for yourself ! However the fame of muscat must not completely distract you from Beaumes de Venise's excellent Côte du Rhône Villages red wine !

Roussillon & Venasque

roussillon-venasque

In Provence, between Luberon and Monts of Vaucluse, Roussillon scintillates under a very ochre light. The village is classified among most beautiful of France, it does not seems like any other. To see: The Academy of Ochres and Pigments Applied Perched at the summit of a rocky outcrop, Venasque is a picturesque village classed amongst one of the 126 "most beautiful villages in France." Venasque dominates the Nesque valley and the Carpentras plain. Venasque is one of the oldest villages of the Comtat Venaissin, from where it takes its name. This respect for the past has almost given Venasque a slightly austere feel, due to its authenticity. Its houses are rebuilt to original specifications. Historic sites to visit : 9th century baptistry. Roman church Notre Dame. The Saracen towers. St Siffrein chapel. Priory of St Pierre les Thermes
