The village of gingerbread: Gertwiller

Gertwiller is the village for its Gingerbread. Indeed, this culinary specialty is the pride of the Barr and Bernstein region.

There used to be seven gingerbread factories in Gertwiller, the recipe was then given to two producers, still working these days, and that sell various delicacies for everyone.

Blueberries among other berries

The blueberry is one of the most famous Alsatian speciality. In July and August, you can pick berries at the producer. Recipe of the Blueberry pie : 1 short crust pastry, 500g of blueberries, 100g of sugar, 2 eggs, 10 cl of cream. Put the fruits on the pastry. Then, put the pie in the oven for 20 min (210°C). Meanwhile, mix the sugar, the eggs and the cream. Half baken, put the mix on the pie, then put it again in the oven for 15-20 min. It's delicious.

Asperula odorata

Vineyards and cellars: free tour

Finally, a free tour through all the wine making villages of the County of Barr and Bernstein. They are many of them, indeed, the county of Barr and Bernstein gather half of all the vineyards of the Lower Rhine region.

You can choose to visit small or bigger villages. In Barr, the celebration of the grape harvest is now a famous event that gives the village the title of capital of the department's wines.

One can also find the unique type of vine in Alsace that is called 'Klevener' of Heiligenstein, this type can also be found in Goxwiller, Gertwiller and Bourgheim.

Other wine specialties are the Kirchberg in Barr, Kastelberg and Wiebelsberg in Andlau, Moenchberg in Andlau and Eichhoffen, Frankstein in Dambach-la-Ville.

Do not hesitate to ask wine makers to show you their cellars, oak barrels and so on, they will be happy to tell you all and invite you to taste their wines.
