Le Château de Montalet
The castle of Montalet was built in the Middle Ages on a promontory overlooking the Cèze valley.
It culminates at 275 m on the edge of the former mining village of Molières-sur-Cèze.
It is assumed that it served as a lookout point between the Régordane road and the access to the Ardèche valley.
Latin documents from 1199 and 1202 tell us that the castle has been owned by the Bérard de Montalet family since the earliest times.
In the 13th century Arnaud II de Bérard de Montalet, besieged in his castle by the Count of Montfort-L'Amaury, set fire to the fortress which was then rebuilt2.
A restoration of the castle has been active since 1984, and is progressing regularly.
