Since 1858, the city of Lourdes represents a center of the catholic pilgrimage. Each year, millions of persons come from around the world, including almost 60.000 ill or disabled persons. The city has been recently promoted as the second hotelkeeper place, just behind Paris.
What to do in Lourdes ?
Lourdes has many inevitable places, like for example the "Médiathèque 61" which takes place in a building that has an metallic architecture and windows from the 19th century.
Lourdes contains a lot of museums, and most of them take part of the religious theme. Numerous monuments are important to visit in the high city like the Lourde's stronghold, the "old Lourdes" almost completely restaured, or even fortified vestiges. In the low city are erected some basilicas. Lourdes owns also an important natural heritage with the Sarrazins and the Wolf cave which are fitted out places.
Gastronomy in Lourdes
Culinary specialties in Lourdes are numerous. Toursits can taste the "tarbais" bean, the Trebons's oignon, the Pyrenees trout or even the Pyrenees sweet chestnut. Other culinary speciality of the region : the duck confit. On culinary side, the Madiran and the Jurançon can be eaten in a tasty meal. At the end of the diner, the Barousse is an excellent regional cheese.
