The Hautes-Pyrenees department is located in the Pyrenean Mountains along the French border with Spain. The department is part of the Midi-Pyrenees region. It is the mountains and dramatic scenery that attract visitors to the Hautes-Pyrenees, with outdoor activities such as cycling, hiking to rafting.
At the far north of the Hautes-Pyrenees department are the market town of Maubourguet as well as Vic-en-Bigorre and the town at Tarbes. To the south of Tarbes is the town of Lourdes, the famous site of miraculous healing powers and very popular pilgrimage destination that attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims each year.
Mountain sites of interests are: the Pic du Midi de Bigorre (2877 metres) that offers amazing views and the ascension to the peak can be done by cable car. The Pyrenees National Park, and the Mont Perdu that is listed world heritage site. The Col d'Aspin that is one of the several scenic routes. The Cirque de Gavarnie, an imposing cliff facing south of Luz and Argeles.
Some of the popular ski resorts are: Cauterets, Saint-Lary-Soulan, Tourmalet, Luz-Ardiden and Hautacam.
Hautes-Pyrenees is also a great place for spa treatments, particularly at Bagneres-de-Bigorre and Cauterets.
