Three departments (the Cavaldos, Manche and Orne) gather a large number of museums and memorials in remembrance of D-Day and the following months. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary commemoration of D-Day, we invite you to discover the most beautiful sites in the region linked to this historical episode.


First port and village of Liberation

Musée de la Libération à Cherbourg-Octeville

First port liberated June 25, 1944, Cherbourg plays a major role in the Liberation. Housed in an old fort occupied by the German army, the Musée de la Libération stands on top of the mountain du Roule, overlooking the city.

Airborne Museum in Sainte-Mère-Eglise

First town liberated, Sainte-Mère-Eglise is located near Utah Beach. The city, which has paid tribute to his liberators, erected in 1964, the Airborne Museum in the heart of town. This memorial contains moving testimony on fighting, but also documents and amenities offered by veterans and their families. It opens its doors every year more than 180,000 visitors.

Utah Beach D-Day Museum at Sainte-Marie-du-Mont

The museum of Utah Beach was built in the place where the American troops landed(turned up) on June 6th, 1944. Created in 1962, the museum receives about 120,000 visits per year. It details the events of D-Day with a large collection of objects, vehicles, testimonies and a movie.

Pointe du Hoc at Cricqueville-en-Bessin

Located between the beaches of Utah Beach and Omaha Beach, the tip was under German domination. Fortified by the Germans and equipped with heavy artillery, the place was attacked on the morning of June 6, 1994 by 225 American Rangers. Open access, visitors can wander among the ruins of managerial and bunkers.

The American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-mer

"The Normandy American Cemetery" overlooking Omaha Beach, one of the five landing beaches. The cemetery is a real "piece of the United States in France." Inaugurated in 1956, the place consists of including a large Memorial, and its extension buried 9386 U.S. soldiers including 4 women.

Juno Beach Centre at Courseulles-sur-mer

The Juno Beach Centre is dedicated to Canada's participation in the Second World War. The museum, for a wide audience, offers permanent exhibitions but also temporary. Outside, it offers the opportunity to visit the Juno Park, the remains of the Atlantic Wall and bunkers.

The Grand Bunker - Museum of the Atlantic Wall in Ouistreham

The museum of the Atlantic Wall allows to discover the history of this coastal fortification built by the Third Reich. The museum strives to restore the best that existed in 1944. It passes through the Grand Bunker, a building 17 meters high, completely restored, which allowed the defense of the Orne estuary. This building hosts 80,000 visitors a year.

Caen and the museum for Peace

The Mémorial de Caen

Dubbed "Museum for Peace", the Memorial is divided into several themed around the history of the twentieth century and its wars. Caen was the target of numerous bombings during the Second World War. Inaugurated in 1988, part of the museum is devoted to D-Day, especially with a visit to an authentic underground bunker in the Memorial.Welcoming nearly 400,000 people annually, it is one of the most visited museums outside Île-de-France.

Memorial Pegasus at Ranville

We end our tour with thIS latter Memorial. Built in Ranville near Caen, this museum is dedicated to the British soldiers of the airborne troops who fought in the Battle of Normandy. It was inaugurated by Prince Charles in June 2000.
