Campan

CAMPAN, they are 9.536 hectares divided into some 11.400 pieces, more a hundred localities, 3 boroughs, ten hamlets, hundreds and hundreds of barns and kilometers of channels.

The commune, a surface of 9536 ha, extends over a maximum length of 18 km and a maximum width of 11 km. The limits partly follow major elements of the relief (watersheds, brooks.) or are function of old cuttings taking only little counts the elements of the relief of them.

Since the borough of Campan, the commune follows the peak of Soum d' Arra (1621 m), in limit of the commune of Asté, then adopts with Saint Marie de Campan a layout is hamlet which spends several times of the peaks to the bottom of slope, until the Payolle locality, in limit of the communes of Asté, Esparros, Beyrède and Aspin.

There the layout follows Adour de Payolle (limit with Arreau and Ancizan) then the brook Gaoube (limit with Ancizan), to reach the peak of Aulon to the 2738 m, not highest of the commune (limit with the commune of Aulon). Compared to the adjacent valleys, the valley of Campan is very open.

The reliefs relatively not very vigorous allow an easy communication with the plain of Adour downstream via Bagnères de Bigorre, with the valley of Aure with the collar d' Aspin and with the valley of Gave of Pau with the west via the famous collar of Tourmalet.

• Church Saint-Jean-Baptist of Campan: it was built in XVIth century. It contains a retable of style baroque dating from the XVIIIth century, the  school of the brothers Ferrère of Asté.           
• Church Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption of Sainte-Marie-de-Campan.
• Saint-Vincent-of-Paul church of Séoube.

Carved by Christian Edmond, artist of Bordeaux and set up in 1926, in front of the church, with the right-hand side of the southern gate, the war memorial of Campan is characterized by its aspect sober and moving.

Far from the heroic soldiers who decorate many monuments in France, the statue which dominates it represents a woman in meditation, with the practically invisible face, and which wears traditional clothing of the valley. This monument gathers in the same homage deaths of the wars of the XXth century for each section of the commune: The Borough, Saint Marie and Séoube.

Finally low-reliefs evoke the peace found through the representations of the three main wealths of the commune: wood, butter, the wool.
