The Troarn history dates back to 1022, with Roger 1 of Montgomeri who sent the canons of Conches (Eure) and built a college. Succeeding his father, Roger II Montgomeri summoned monks of the Abbey of Conches (Eure) and founded the Benedictine abbey of St. Martin in 1048 on the site of the former. This church was dedicated May 13, 1059 by Conteville of Odon, bishop of Bayeux, half brother of William says "The Bastard". The monk Durand was named 1st abbot. Roger II Montgomeri (a famous descendant of this family should participate in the liberation of Normandy in 1944) was wife of Mabile Bellême who died tragically murdered in Bures sur Dives in his mansion.
