Tourism Quimper
Quimper is the main city of the department of Finistère, with a population of about 63,000 inhabitants, known as the Quimpérois. Quimper is also the capital of Cornwall, the region which lies at the top of Britanny. Since 1989, Quimper is classed as a City of Art and History by the minister of Culture and Communicaton due to its remarkable architectural and artistic patrimony.
It takes several days to value the charm of the city of Quimper and to discover its wealthy patrimony where one can find the Cathédrale Saint Corentin, one of the most beautiful Cathedrals in Britanny, its old quarter filled with timbered ancient buildings and houses, the Musée des Beaux Arts, the Musée National Breton, and even the Musée de la Faïence, another local treasure. Quimper and its rich history dates back to the time of the Gaul’s and was then subjected to a series of wars in Britain; religious wars, suffering under various encounters and several attempts of looting before finding peace and prosperity.
In Quimper, ‘green tourism’ is one of many possibilities available to tourists including magnificent boast cruises on the river Odet, considered to be one of the most beautiful rivers in France; blending lush landscape with castles and manors. Every year in July, folk festivals from Cornwall are organised in the old town of Quimper.
