Tourism Perigueux
Périgueux is the main city of the Dordogne department. Located in the middle of the Périgord, Périgueux is ranked as “Art and History city” and claims 2,000 years of history with its 39 historic buildings. Visiting Périgueux, is venturing across time in the ancient Gallo-Roman "Vesunna", in the medieval and Renaissance city which has a wealthy past.
Come stroll through the old streets of the medieval city or from places to places to admire the wood-framed houses, homes equipped with towers, signs of wealth of the Périgueux merchants. Vésone tower is a heritage from Gallo-Roman period and the jardin des Arènes is located on the site of an amphitheater among the largest in ancient Gaul.
Périgueux with its cathedral of Saint-Front, has a masterpiece of the Byzantine architecture with its cross plan and its 5 domes. Built on the road to St Jacques de Compostela, located at the top of a hill, the cathedral is considered to be a UNESCO World Heritage Monument since 1998.
It would be impossible to talk about Périgueux without its gastronomy and local products that are found on the city markets which are held daily and particularly those renowned on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
