Dordogne is a French department located in the Aquitaine region. It is surrounded by the departments of Haute-Vienne, Corrèze, Lot, Lot-et-Garonne, Gironde, Charente-Maritime and Charente. There are more than 1000 castles in Dordogne among the most famous are: the Château d'Hautefort, the Château de Castelnaud-la-Chapelle and the Château de Commarque. One can also find ‘Bastides’ old manor like houses, especially around Monpazier and Villefranche-du-Périgord.

 

Among the 148 most beautiful villages in France, 9 are located in Dordogne, this villages are: Belvès, Beynac-et-Cazenac, Domme, Limeuil, Monpazier, La Roque-Gageac, SaintAmand-de-Coly, Saint-Jean-de-Côle, Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère.

The Vézère valley and its bassin shelters many prehistorical sites such as the Pataud shelter, the Micoque, the Laugerie-Haute et Laugerie-Basse sites, the famous Cro-Magnon shelter, the very famous Lascaux caves in Montignac, the Combarelles caves, the Font-de-Gaume in Eyzies-de-Tayac and the ones in Rouffignac.

Remarkable towns in the department are: Sarlat, Bergerac, Nontron with its garden of arts, its art crafts centre, the knife factory ‘le Périgord’, périgueux and its Gallo-Roman ruins, its médiéval town. The village of Bournat, the Brantôme Abbey, the Beynac archeological park.
