Tourism - Ariège
The Ariege is a French department that is part of the Midi-Pyrénées region. It is surrounded by the Haute-Garonne, the Aude and the Pyrénées-Orientales departments as well as Spain and Andorre. Its population is 142 435 inhabitants and its capital is the city of Foix.
The department is divided from the north to the south in three parts: The plain of Ariege, located in the north of the department, which consists of plains and hills. The Pyrenees piedmont that comprises the Plantaurel mountain range and hills at less than 1000 meters high. Finally, the highland of Ariege, mainly composed of high altitude Pyrenees mountains.
The natural heritage in Ariege offers numerous activities such as hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, climbing, paragliding and many more. The historical heritage is remarkable with many castles as the Chateau de Foix, cathedrals as Saint-Antonin-de-Pamiers and Cathares vestiges as the Chateau de Monségur.
