Ardresis

A day dedicated to sport and leisure. Two kilometres long and one wide, the lake of Ardres is the most extensive body of water in the Calaisian marshlands. You will be able to practise aquatic sports, fishing, boating.

The gothic chapel of St. Louis in Tournehem/ Guemy, in worked stone : the choir which dates from the end of the 15th century is in the flamboyant style ; the nave was reconstructed in 1930. The chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Forest, at Tournehem (1713), modelled mainly on the rustic chapels of the region of the XVIII and XIX centuries, built in stone or brick. The chapel of the Rouge Camp erected at Louches in 1802, a type of Temple in calcareous stone. It is Neoclassique, a formula that had a certain vogue in the XIX century, ( St. Quentin in Ardres in 1827, Our Lady of Mercy at Landrethun in 1860, and Our Lady of the Rosary at Louches 1861). St. Theresa?s chapel at Clerques/ Audenfort, a 1930 Roman-Byzantine edifice built of flint and bricks whose presence would not be astonishing if one found them in some Norman seaside resorts.

Charming artists' village on the Roman Way (Great Leulene Road) linking Thérouanne to Sangatte and Wissant. In the centre of a farmyard stands a magnificient 17th century octagonal dovecote of white Guémy stone. On the other side of the village, vestiges of a castle visited by Joan of Arc. The limestone church spire is dated 1742.

Julius Caesar and King Arthur (551) may have stopped here. In 1179, the castle was restored and fortified, and a dam built on the Hem. Granted a Chater and council in 1273, it remains above all the city of Antoine, Great Bastard of Burgundy, natural son of Philip III the Good and brother of Charles the Brave, as demonstrate the ruins of Collégiale (1502), the entrance door of the castle and the door lintel of the mill (sandstone block bearing his motto, emblem and arms without bend sinister. The town square has retained its charm, café and legends. On the Hem, fish-ponds dear to Mme de Pompadour. Picnics in the nearby forest (chapel 1713).

Offers mavelous walks through wooded marshes full of wildlife and fragrant with wild mint. At dusk, the scenery appears as if drawn in India ink: flamboyant sunsets reflected in still, reed-bordered pools, dotted with hunterss huts, kingdom of frogs amidst water lilies and hunting paradise when the August teal passes trough. Delightful village of old whitewashed farm houses : one is guarded by two ornate Louis XVI pillars; another, called the "Templar Farm", displays corded stone-work at mid-height, a Renaissance window and angle-walled tower. Target shooting on the grounds of a charming country house. S ucculent crimson strawberries. Pilgrimage to the limestone Yeuse chapel.
