Vervins

The Sloping roofs of Vervins and the strengthened enclosure emergent three monuments symbolic systems: the high bell-tower of the church, the belfry of the Town hall and turrets of the Castle-Neuf.

The gross tower porch of the church points out the opulence of the old city, the belfry, that Vervins was space of freedom written in a “law” as of Xll E century and the Castle-Nine, the peace which was signed there in 1598, after the difficult period of the wars of religion and the first European wars.

Rebuilt almost completely after the destruction of the city by the Spanish army in 1552, the church kept the vaults, a chorus and Gothic pillars decorated with paintings to the weapons of the givers. It preserves furniture and tables coming, for example, Chartreuse of the Valley Saint-Pierre, in particular a monumental table of Jouvenet.

The building and most of furniture is classified.

You can discover, in the periphery of the old districts, the law courts and of surprising constructions “art nouveau” and “art déco” which were  the orders of the industrialists or the houses of architects.
