Brégnier-cordon

The village of Brégnier-Cordon is on banks of the Rhone. It counts 4 hamlets.

Two are separated by an arm from the river: the Bruyère and Cordon.

The third, Glandieu, are placed against cliff and 4th Brégnier

Brégnier-Cordon shelters some beautiful buildings such as the Castle of the Bar whose remain a square keep and a round tower, a presbytery of the 18th century or a church of the 19th century.

The Rhone forms integral part of the life of the village of Brégnier-Cord since a museum is dedicated to it. The Museum High-Rhone Stopover recalls the history of the river through an enthralling exposure.

The current principal building dates from the XX century, but the fortifications go back to XIV century.

The castle was the theatre of a fact various implying a young seminarist of the village of Brangues, Antoine Berthet, engaged in 1826 by the count of Cordon like tutor of his children. The castle of Cordon is a whole of ruins of a feudal castle located on the commune of Brégnier-Cordon, in the department of the Ain.
Mandement of Cord is one of oldest of Bugey. It was made by it nomination by the Emperor at the House of Savoy of the XI century which made infeodation with vassal of it. Since then, the castle of Cordon always remained in possession of this family, one of oldest of Savoy.
Ideally located on a height dominating the Rhone, it was used as watchtower with the steps of Savoy. It was confiscated in 1434 by Amédée VIII, duke of Savoy, in Aynard II of Cord, which had taken the weapons against its suzerain. The castle of Cord was dismantled and the Cord private of the title of lord of Cord. The Cord, after having recovered the seigniory of Cord and all justice, resided then at the castle of the Bar.
