Fort-Queyras is a stronghold from the middle-ages reviewed and restructured by Vauban. Posed on its rock at an altitude of 1 400 m, its impressive size dominates the Guil valley, in the heart of Queyras. He had built an outpost designed to delay the enermy in order to allow Montdauphiin and Brainçon the necessary time required to set up their defence. Vauban strengthened Fort Queyras as from 1692. He created an advanced enclosure on the north face, also foreseeing an extension of the fort on the west side. In 1700, he envisaged a new enclosure on the east face. These works were carried out in the XVIIIth and XIXth c.
