Roche-sur-yon

Napoleon loved reckless bets and high stakes. The 25th of May 1804, the emperor decided, for the pacification and the Development of the Vendée, hard bothered ever since, to round a new city, anticipated for 15.000 inhabitants. This city is constructed proceeding the old core of La Roche sur Yon and it is built by the engineers of the 19th century, therefore the big coherence of town planning and architecture. You can admire the equestrian statue of Napoleon I in an immense square overlooking the rest of the town

The theatre in La Roche-sur-Yon resembles a temple because of its size, features and facade. The 450 seat interior is simple, classic Italian style, with the decor being completed by Louis-Lucian Penne, a famous artist from Nantes. In 1985, it was listed amongst the most historic monuments for its facade and roof together with the spectacular concert hall decor.

The Arago swimming pool complex in La Roche sur-Yon is of international standard. It is equipped with a large main pool, a learner pool and a babies pool. For those wishing to relax or keep fit there are toboggans, fountains, water cannons, water chutes, sauna, hammocks and hot baths. There is also an ice rink within this complex.

The Yon which crosses this area provides numerous opportunities and advantages. Each year there are more and more sporting, leisure and tourist activities apparent in the region. There are many opportunities for canoeing and windsurfing enthusiasts as well as fishermen.

The setting up of cycle paths around the Pentagone area allows cyclists to move around La-Roche-sur-Yon in complete safety.

Craftmanship can be seen in the wheel, from the first half of the 20th century, at the Rambourg Mill, situated beside the Yon in the Nesmy Community. There you can find out how the mill operates and the secrets of making flour.

The "Café de l' Eté" or " Summer Cafe" Festival brings life to the town centre and attracts a large, enthusastic audience. All types of artists from various countries come each year to take part in this festival and play their music ranging from blues and reggae to the latest techno.
