Monastère royal de Brou

The Royal Monastery of Brou is a gothic style masterpiece from the 16th century. It became a French historical monument in 1862. Located in the country near Bourg-en-Bresse, it was built by Margaret of Austria to give her husband a magnificient tomb. She died before the construction was complete but she is buried with her husband and her mother-in-law in mausoleums inside the church. The Monastery of Brou, made of stone and marble, with its three cloisters and its church is an amazing demonstration of eternal love. Only 1 hour away from Lyon, the monastery has hosted since 1922 the Bourg-en-Bresse city art museum.Inside this two-storey museum you find a collection of religious statues from the 13th to the 17th century as well as a collection of paintings from the 16th to the 20th century and modern art.
