The Landes is a French department that is part of the Aquitaine region. The tourism industry is important for the department’s economy. It is mostly concentrated around the coasts with towns like Mimizan, Biscarrosse, Vielle-Saint-Girons, Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains, Moliets, Contis, Messanges, Seignosse, Capbreton, Tarnos, Hossegorand Labenne where weather conditions for surfing are excellent and famous around the world. 

Also, one has to mention ‘culinary tourism’ as the Landes are famous for foie gras, Saint-Sever chicken and duck magrets.

Balneology is also attracts many people in the Landes with spas like Saint-Paul-lès-Dax, Eugénie-les-Bains, Saubusse-les-Bains, Dax and Préchacq-les-Bains.

 

Finally, three historical paths of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela ran through the Landes department:

Via Lemovicensis, Via Podiensis and Via Turonensis and also ‘Voie de Soulac Littoral Aquitain’. The marking of these medieval paths are attracting a new type of tourism.
