Discover Montpeyroux

Montpeyroux:

A small village perched on the top of the Monte Perroso hill, the village is quiet as is the Dordogne countryside surrounding it. The village of Montpeyroux is located in the picturesque Lidoire Valley.

The Saint Pierre church was built in the 12th century and is now listed as historical monument. The castle was bought by Michel de Montaigne for his young brother who rebuilt it  at the end of the 16th century. Also, the 'Grange Dimiere' a side building of the 'Châtellerie de Montravel'.

Discover Saint Michel de Montaigne Castel

St Michel de Montaigne:

The castle is dating from the 14th century and Michel de Montaigne was born and died here. The castle was partially destroyed by a massive fire in 1885. Though the flames spared the library tower (listed as historical monument) in which the philosopher used to have his library et from where he as writing his essays.

One can imagine the time when the writer was living here as the place hasn't changed since then. There is also a chapel dedicated to Saint Michel, Michel de Montaigne's bedroom and finally, the famous library of which the ceilings are decorated with the writer's written thoughts.

Discover the village of Montcaret

Montcaret:

This small village located in the south west of the Dordogne possesses a Romanesque church dating from the 11th century as well as the vestiges of a great Gallo-Roman villa. These two buildings are listed as historical monuments.

Excavations have allow to discover two rooms decorated with mosaics that stretches on more than 400m2 as well as thermal baths and a swimming pool also decorated with mosaics. These vestiges are dating from the 1st and the 4th centuries D.C. These buildings is one of the most beautiful Gallo Roman sites in the South West of France.

Visit of architectural heritage of Bergerac

Bergerac:

The architectural heritage of Bergerac has been maintained and restored respecting the architectural styles of the past.

The National museum of Tabacco, located inside the Peyrarede Mansion, displays a collection of work presenting the cultural and social history of tobacco through time and civilisations.

The Wine and Boat museum is located in a half-timbered house on the Myrpe square, and presents the evolution of vineyards and river heritage of Bergerac.

Finally, stroll around the streets and visit the Myrpe Square, Pelissiere Square and its church Saint Jacques that was a stop over on the Saint James's way and the monastery of Recollets, today a wine 's house, the tourist centre of Bergerac.
