Notre-Dame de l?Assomption, Marnay-sur-Seine

notre-dame-de-l-assomption-marnay-sur-seine
The church was built during the 12th century by the monks of Saint-Denis Abbey. The roman church was widely destroyed during the religious wars. The existing bell tower and vaults were rebuilt during the 17th century. The original paintings which formerly covered the entire church were hidden with white during the 18th century according to the religious rule of that time. However you may still admire some remaining parts of the original paintings, found in 1973, representing mainly animals. Have a look at a retable representing the legend of Santa Claus, patron of the bargees working in Marnay-sur-Seine and painted in the 16th century.
