Welcome to puy-l'évêque

Puy derives from the latin word “podium”, meaning a hill or a promontory. The village was incorporated into the territory ruled by the bishop of Cahors at the end of the Albigensian Crusade (1227). It was later known as Puy-l’Évêque.

The bishop’s tower occupies the high ground with knights’ houses nearly. The popular quarter is down by the Lot with its activities linked to river trade.

The itinerary overloaf involves steep slopes and steps and is not recommended for those with a mobility problem. The 3 streets at river level are accessible to cars and wheelchairs (La cale, rue de la Cale and rue des Clédelles). Access to these streets is via rue Docteur Rouma and rue des Tanneurs. The 3 main viewing points, situated in car parks, are also accessible.

Built at the 12th century by the bishops of Cahors, this castle was transformed into fortified town at the 14th century, it means that during the One hundred Year old war, the time when it preserves the covered way and the drawbridge in spite of the restoration in Renaissance style at the 16th century. It shelters today the Museum of the Wine of Cahors dedicated to the vine and the wine of Quercy. 

Space Muséographique installed around the old furnace with coal Saint Joseph, course explaining the various artisanal manufactoring processes of the porcelain and the earthenware, the raw material to the finished part - presentation of the models manufactured on the spot.
