Vidauban

Protected by the vault Saint-Brigitte, built at the top of a rock piton of 180 meters, the territory of the commune extends, in the middle of the valley of Argens, since the crystalline solid mass of the Moors, in the South, jusqu' with the first links limestones of Préalpes in North.

This position makes all the charm of the city and thus offers a multitude of landscapes which the flanor can discover at the time of his walks or his excursions: in the South, it is the kingdom of the umbrella pine, the heathers and the rosy sandstones; in North, it is that of the pine of Alep, the holm oak, and small picturesque cliffs of the throats of Argens.

Vidauban is crossed by two rivers: the Argens river, in the vicinity immediate of the downtown area, and the river of Goes, in the South-east, whose cascades are particularly appreciated.

The downtown area shelters many places with the beautiful fountains where it is good to take its time in the shade of the plane trees.

Very wide, the commune is also characterized by the presence of many “variations”: hamlets or residential zones in full shift, quiet, where it makes good things in life.

  With the building site d' insertion Holy-Brigitte, the town of Vidauban wished to be invested in the rehabilitation and the maintenance of the inheritance while allowing to the socio-professional reintegration people excluded from the work world. The commune of Vidauban has on its territory the greatest number of furnaces with pitch known in the Var. The majority of these furnaces were used before the years 1850 to produce “naval” pitch, substance resinous and sticking.

An earthenware jar was filled with sticks of pines (approximately 1400 liters of sticks), fire was put on the upper part of the sticks and as soon as combustion was started, the earthenware jar was closed by large jointed stones, covered at least 50 cm of ground to ensure the insulation. The side corridor, which had ensured the arrival of the air at the beginning of combustion, was then sealed by a stone and the sealing was carried out with thz clay. Combustion with the choked could start, it lasted approximately 48 hours. At the end of a few hours, an aqueous liquid ran out.

At the end of the combustion, only a thick and black tar was collected. The bottom of the receptacle was furnished the water so that pitch solidifies quickly, then it was immediately cut out of pieces.

Place of relaxation and leisures, the nautical base of Vidauban offers to a whole a wild and natural framework. A surface of picnic, ideally located under oaks centenaries, in edge of the river of of Argens, allows you to enjoy fully for a pause snack.

For several years, the site has accomodated the practice of the canoe and the kayak during all the beautiful season.

This activity, strong appraisal of Vidaubannais and the tourists, is practised in full safety, in the form of stroll calm and refreshing, for two hours or more.

For the “curious ones” with the interested glance, the course proposed on the water allows the interesting meetings, such as tortoises cistude, frogs green, will hérons, Bergeronnettes, hens of water, as well as many fish and insects.

It is also possible, with the wire of this watery walk between shade and sun, to admire the fast flight of fishing Martin, bird characteristic of the water spring .

Year by year the base with several boats of the type “large canoe is equipped”, favourable with strolls family. Many individual kayaks,  all size, are also at disposal.
