Blaye is located 45 km from Bordeaux. Blaye has played an important part in the defense of the area. Once occupied by the romans, the town has also been invaded by the barbarians and housed the mortal remains of Count Roland de Roncevaux.

In the 17th century, Louis the 14th asked Vauban to build a citadel, and the work was completed between 1685 and 1689. Today, this site is part of the major sites of Aquitaine and is also a contestant on the list of the UNESCO world heritage.
