Banyuls

Rocked by the purest Catalan traditions, in the crossroads of France and Spain, the city knew to preserve its rich person historical heritage, cultural, natural and artistic. Templiers, fishermen, smugglers, refugees Spanish, as many traces of the History than Banyuls knew to preserve, offering thus today a strong testimony of a tumultuous past, in particular by its architectural monuments (vaults, turns of duty...).

The beauty and the diversity of the landscapes of Banyuls, but also its incomparable luminosity were always a mine of the inspiration for the artists of the area and besides. Maillol, painter sculptor born in Banyuls and of international repute, is the emblem. In the calm one of the back country, a museum pays homage in the house to him where he lived as from 1910. Several of its works are exposed in the city, of which one of its greater achievements, war memorials pacifist. Today still Banyuls continuous to inspire its contemporaries who installed their workshops along the port, and will open readily the doors to you of their passion.

While arriving to Banyuls, you cannot miss the small white blazing chapel perched at the top of a hill which seems to take care on the village. It was built in 1863 by Bonaventure Reig, after a pilgrimage with Notre Dame of Salette in Isere. A small path allows you to reach it foot or in the car. In the middle of the vines and cork oaks, the vault offers to you with its feet a single panorama on Banyuls, its soil and all the Vermilion Coast.
