La Citadelle de Sisteron
Between Provence and Dauphiné, dominating the cluse where the Durance flows, the Citadelle of Sisteron bars the sky, crowns the town with its walls, its bastions and its keep.
The view from there is striking, over 150 km, it offers the most beautiful view of Haute Provence.
A listed historic monument, covering 10 hectares, it bears eight centuries of architecture and history.
The keep and the wall walk, built on the narrow rocky spine, date back to the 13th century, while the bastioned walls date back to the 16th century.
Of Vauban's project, designed in 1692, only the powder magazine was built.
Major alterations were carried out on the north side in the mid-19th century.
It was at this time that the magnificent underground staircase linking the fortress to the town was dug into the rock.
