Tourism Istres : A city at the heart of Provence
Sub-prefecture of the area of the pond of Berre, Istres is at a few kilometers of the Mediterranean, at the edge of the plain of Crau.
Twice elected "the most sporting City of France", it offers to the inhabitants many sporting infrastructures and leisures.
The city was built between the pond of Berre and the pond of Olivier, splendid water level naturalness of 220 hectares who shelters an mini-port and his boats electrics. The city knew to preserve its old center: maze of the typical lanes, frontages of private mansions of 18th, center of contemporary art, archaeological museum. Three religious buildings are to be retained: the Romane Chapel Saint Sulpice, the church Notre Dame de Beauvoir perched at the top of the city and the very new church Sainte Famille, built in stone of Ménerbes by the Companions.
With its "four flowers", Istres is a true flowered garden, where it's good to stroll. A Mediterranean garden presents more than 130 plant species on banks of the pond of Olivier. From its central situation, Istres makes it possible to radiate in all Provence, towards the sea, or Alpilles, at less than one hour from Marseilles, Aix en Provence or Arles.
