Charente-Maritime is a French department located in the south-west of France and belongs to the Poitou-Charente region. This department enjoys good weather conditions, a rich and various architectural and environmental heritage, as well as being located on the coast which makes it an attractive vacation area.

Among the remarkable sites in the department there are the old harbor of La Rochelle, the Ré and Oléron citadels, the ‘Cité de Brouage’, the seaside towns of Royan, Fouras and Châtelaillon, the villages of Talmont-sur-Gironde, Mornac-sur-Seudre, La Flotte and Ars-en-Ré that are all listed as most attractive villages in France. Also, Saintes and Rochefort are classified as city of art and history thanks to the many historical monuments.

The department counts also many natural sites as the ‘Parc naturel interrégional’, the Marais Poitevin and an ornithological reserve, the Marais d’Yves natural reserve. Several sites in the department are now on the UNESCO World Heritage list such as the Saint-Martin-de-Ré Citadel, the Saint-Eutrope de Saintes basilica, the ‘hospice des pèlerins de Pons’ and the Saint-Pierre-de-la-Tour d'Aulnay church.
