Tourism Bonnieux
Chef lieu de canton. The town stretches Crest Luberon plateau Claparèdes and banks Calavon. Bonnieux is one of the most beautiful hilltop villages of the north slope of the Luberon.
From the site, visitors can enjoy a wonderful panorama on the agricultural plain of the valley Calavon, the Monts de Vaucluse and Ventoux. Dominated by its high church, half Romanesque, half Gothic, at 425 m above sea level, this pretty village commands the valley of Lourmarin, one lane through the Luberon.
Bonnieux was an oppidum or fortified village inhabited in the Neolithic and Bronze Age. At the Gallo-Roman village was located at the foot of his current location, and the rich areas were numerous. In the first century, the vast territory of Bonnieux was crossed by the Roman road from Cadiz to Milan, with relays in the Enlightenment: it was one of the most important ways of Western Europe and the traffic was very dense.
At the Pont Julien, located on the territory of Bonnieux, Bitron then called, was made the junction of secondary road north-south through the Combe de Lourmarin. In the Middle Ages for security reasons, the city is built around the raised area that was the Celtic-Ligurian oppidum.
