Tourism - Alpes-de-Haute-Provence
The Alpes-de-Haute-Provence is one of the largest and least densely populated French department with an area of 6,935 km2 and about 140 000 inhabitants, less than 20 inhabitants per km2. It is a land of contrasts between the Alps and Provence, bordered by Italy. The altitude ranges from 260 to 3,450 m. Vegetation varies from Mediterranean holm oaks and olive trees to sub-alpine pine trees, spruces and alpine meadows. In the midst of this amazing landscape, torrents have carved beautiful gorges such as the Verdon and the last glaciers have left high altitude turquoise lakes. The Allos lake located at 2,230 m high, is the largest high altitude lake in Europe.
Eleven remarkable villages have been classified as "Villages et cités de caractère" such as Annot, Lurs, Castellane, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and many more. They all have a unique architectural heritage and less than 2,000 inhabitants. The region is also known for its high quality local products such as olive oil, honey, cheeses and spirits.
