The Place of Cornières

the-place-of-cornieres

This charming small place locked up in a setting of greenery and old houses is a tasted haven of peace of some residents, birds and turtle-doves, but also of the walkers and sometimes of the amateurs of game of bowls.

The majority of the houses were built or altered with the XVIIIth, but several buildings are certainly quite former. Notice the stone lintels of the doors and windows where are engraved, sometimes, the name of the owner and the date of construction.

Admire also this beautiful equipment of stones cut like this medieval latrine…

The tower of the clockin Fourcès

the-tower-of-the-clockin-fources

Old western door of the city, it dates from the Middle Ages. This door is in a square tower, provided a archère in pattée cross and a passage of barrel vault broken. It comprised neither harrow, neither pole-axe nor drawbridge. It had two openings additional condemned today,  on the right which served the presbytery, the second on the left giving access to what was probably the primitive church of the village (today house of the dwelling), quite former to the current church built in XIInd or XIIIrd century. The bell of the tower which strikes the hours since many centuries comprises inscriptions engraved as a cross which confirms the presence of a place devoted to the worship.

By crossing this door they reach, by the old covered way, with the arboretum (shrubby) and with banks of the diversion canal which locks up the village in the west before joining the course of the Auzoue river downstream from the village thus saving the floods due to the risings .
