Former capital of the kingdom of Austrasia and cradle of the carolingian dynasty. The history of Metz started 3,000 years ago as indicated by the richness of its heritage. It has a french culture although the german culture is very present in the Imperial District.

From the bridge of the Grilles up to the Germans gate, You will discover the city walls dating from the 13th and the 15th centuries and on the right bank of river Seille you will see the city wall dating from the 17th century.

Created in 1974 during the construction of the Metz-Thionville motorway, Saint-Symphorien lake occupies former wetland along a branch of river Moselle.
