Col de Roncevaux


Puerto de Ibañeta (in spanish) peaks at 3468 feet at the heart of western Pyrenees. It is situated near the French-Spanish border, however it is officially in Spain.

The pass is an important crossing point of the pilgrimage of Santiago de Compostela. As the matter of fact, after a stopover to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, the pilgrims continue their journey by the pass of Roncesvalles. On the way,you can discover the San Salvado Of Ibañeta chapel's vestiges, built in 1127.

In 1965, a new chapel, was inaugurated near the former. At the end the hike, the walkers join the village of Roncesvalles the municipality Roncesvalles, Oreagga in Basque.
