Details

The foundation of the Benedictine monastery :
In the 6th century, Theudère, a member of a rich local family, found a small monastery in the quiet site of Saint-Chef village.
At the start of the 9th century, was introduced the Rule of Saint Benedict.
In the 13th century, the influence of the abbey reached its highpoint, with authority over about a hundred churches and a dozen priories. This rich and glorious period is reflected in the church itself, with its Romanesque frescoes.
In 1840, Prosper Mérimée classified the church and its frescoes as a historical monument.
Architecture :
The church dates from the 11th and 12th century. The nave, with its wooden roof, is divided into seven bays. The transept does not extend very far : the chapel of saint Clement, topped with the archangel chapel forms the northern extremity ; the chapel of saint Theudère and the bell-tower are located at the southern end.

Abbey Church of Saint-Chief:

The history of the village of Saint-Chef is directly linked to its Benedictine abbey, listed building in 1840 for its Romanesque church among the oldest of the Dauphine and the Angels Chapel, entirely covered with frescoes from the late 11th century .
