Welcome to ténarèze

Sub-prefecture since 1800, Condom counts 7555 inhabitants for a surface of 9434 ha. Built on a calcareous headland, the city is raised at 82 meters high. The average temperature bordering the 12°C confirms the softness of the climate. The most probable etymology is “Condatòmagus” which means “gone of the confluence”. Indeed, this is at the foot of the city which the brook of Gèle throws in the Fall which goes down from the plate of Lannemezan. The weapons of the city represent a bridge with five arches, a river, five turns and two keys.

To discover:

• The church of Goalard d' origin primitive novel, modified or destroyed in a compartmental way has a flat bedside. At the base of the wall-belfry, a gate in gothic arch was a long time the only entry of the church.
• The small church of Pomaro made up  a regular apparatus is dedicated to Saint-Laurans.
• The windmill of Moussaron in operating condition, and the house of the miller (private, visible outside).
• The hamlet of Grazimis has a great number of castle, Fousserie (XIIIrd century), Pouypardin (XIIIrd century/ISMH), and Verduzan (XVIIth century). The church dates from XIInd century, and communicated with the castle of Fousseries.
• The mill of Autièges, old flour mill of XIIIrd century, was altered on several occasions and in particular under the Rebirth.
• The church of Cannes is mentioned for the first time at the XIIIrd century. It belongs to the many churches damaged by the passage of the troops of Montgomery.
• The village of Lialores which shows in some places its old fortifications contains a Romance church of XIInd century (classified with the MH), formerly famous place of pilgrimage.
• The church of Vicnau (visible outside), primitive Romance style (Xth century), was strengthened in XIVth century. On the place of the hamlet, a “Work” was used to shoe the animals.
• The tower of Mothes (ISMH) is located at the interior of the grounds.
• The Romance church of Scieurac dedicated to St Christophe is built approximately and average apparatus very regular.
• The church of Holy-Germaine (ISMH) is built, according to the legend, with the place where Hermana undergoes the martyrdom which was inflicted to him by Buckwheats and other infidels. The gate of Romance style to the rustic treatment confirms the seniority of the site.
• The neogothic church St-Michel dating from the end of the XIXth century, is high on the foundations of a Romance church (1210).
• The convent of Carmel old monastery of Dominican of Prouilhan founded in XIIIrd century, shelters a gate of XVIIth century (ISMH) decorated with grooved pilasters and small niches. The church of Herret of Romance style, is lit by eleven windows distributed of each cà´té of the nave. The bell-tower dates from the XIXth century.

Nothing like it, after a good meal or a good nap, to turn to the many leisures which our soil offers. The ways and marked out hiking trails, on foot, bicycle, with horse, trott them in boats or canoes on the Fall, the crossing of the lake of Bousquetara to the veil, idleness with fishing, the shivers with the acrobranche or the sports air… the sportsman will be able to keep the form between swimming with the center aqualudic of Condom, tennis, the shooting with the arc or the traditional Gascon metal disc.

Ténarèze combines with the happiness of the festive spirit of Gascogne with amongst other things the indétrônable Festival of Bandaged, the many village festivals, and an attractive culture of richnesses with its museums which offer a panel of single and enthralling topics: the Museum of Armagnac, that of the Na5ive art, the Museum of the Pilgrim, like the Machines of War of the Middle Ages, the Church-Museum of Pradau and its pontifical clothes.
