Discovering Péronne

Church Saint-Jean-Baptiste

The museum Alfred Danicourt
The Museum Alfred Danicourt, founded in the city hall in 1877, is the only museum of the Somme entirely to be plundered and destroyed by the German troops between 1916 and 1918. It lost 98% of its collections. Only some archaeological treasures were saved by the conservative who buried them at the entry of the Germans in the city in 1914. These treasures will be again withdrawn from " the iinterest" German in 1941. Forgotten by the first rebuilding, the museum does not find its place in the city hall; after 1955 and the second rebuilding of the building.
Its founder, the former mayor Charles Alfred Danicourt, had made of this museum a cultural headlight for the Sum before 1900. There is still found today one of the most beautiful collections in the world of Gallic currencies, the ancient goldsmithery, of funerary furniture mérovingien, a panorama of the regional production of flint during Prehistory, or some good examples of the Picardy painting of XIX - XX centuries.
